Roslyn Weiss, "The Profoundly Philosophical Biblical Exegesis of Hasdai Crescas"

Isadore and Rosalie Sharp Lecture

The incisive thinker Hasdai Crescas (1340-1410) challenged Maimonidean Aristotelianism in many ways. He sought to support his own generally more traditional views not only by way of rational argument and by appeal to rabbinic tradition but also through ingenious biblical exegesis. In this talk I shall present and discuss several examples of Crescas's biblical exegesis with attention to their deeply philosophical inflection.
