Robert Alter, "The Challenge of Translating the Bible"

Pearl and Jack Mandel Lecture in Jewish Studies

The Hebrew Bible, both in its narrative prose and in its poetry, exhibits many aspects of subtly wrought and expressive style, and these have been gravely neglected by the sundry modern translators, who fail to take in the essential literary dimension of the Bible. In this lecture, Prof. Alter will identify some of these aspects of style and illustrate how an English translation might try to represent them.

Robert Alter is Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley.

This event is free and open to the public. No registration required. Limited seating.
