Description: “New Directions in Jewish Women’s and Gender Studies” is a day-long symposium featuring leading scholars in the field in conversation with each other about their work, their evolving methodologies, and their thoughts on the current and future state of the field of Jewish Women’s and Gender Studies. Each participant will briefly discuss a primary source central to her work. Prof. Doris Bergen will then draw connections among the presentations and the moderators will conduct a wide-ranging discussion incorporating the primary texts, the presentations, and larger questions about the ways in which scholarly approaches to gender have changed and developed in recent years.

Symposium Schedule:

9:00am–9:30am, Welcome and Introductions (Location: JHB318)

9:30am–12:00pm, Session 1: Conversation moderated by Judith Taylor. Participants include: Andrea Most (University of Toronto), Naomi Seidman (Graduate Theological Union), Zohar Weiman-Kelman (University of Toronto), Carol Zemel (York University); responses by Doris Bergen (University of Toronto).

12:00pm–1:30pm, Lunch

1:30pm–3:30pm, Session 2: Conversation moderated by Sara Horowitz (York University). Participants include: Mara Benjamin (St. Olaf College), ChaeRan Freeze (Brandeis University), Anna Shternshis (University of Toronto); responses by Doris Bergen (University of Toronto).

4:00pm–6:00pm, Keynote Lecture (Location: JHB100): Naomi Seidman (Graduate Theological Union), “Tevye’s Dream: The Making and Unmaking of Modern Jewish Marriage”
