Neta Elkayam and Amit Hai Cohen, "Moroccan Jewish Chaabi Music in Darija"

We are pleased to invite you to a workshop with Israeli artists Neta Elkayam and Amit Hai Cohen during their first tour in Canada. Participants will have a first-hand experience of the current Moroccan cultural revival in Israel, presented by a leading duo of this generation. Growing up in the periphery of Israel, surrounded by Moroccan-Jewish music, Neta and Amit create music, visual art, and video works that deal with the interplay of "past Maghrebi traditions" and the "Israeli present." Their musical project, Howa Jani [he comes to me], consists of new arrangements of music written by Jewish Maghrebi artists. The project includes songs written/performed by women musicians  such as Zohra al-Fassia, Line Monty, and Reinette L'Oranaise, as well as  original songs composed by Neta and Amit. In the workshop, Neta and Amit discuss their personal history, their creative process, and their artistic agenda—all demonstrated through performance of their own work.
