Mark Meyerson, "'Become Christians or Die!': Christian Mob Violence Against Jews and Muslims in Late Medieval Spain"

This paper stems from a much larger project dealing with violence within and between Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities in premodern Spain, circa 1300–1600. The paper addresses specifically the violence of the Christian mob against the Jews of Valencia in 1391, which resulted in the forced conversion of most of the Jews, the killing of some, and the dissolution of the Jewish community, and the Christian mob’s violence against the Muslims of Valencia in 1455, which resulted in the destruction of the Muslim quarter and the murder of some Muslims. The paper is based on extensive archival research and offers a new interpretation of the motives of the Christian laborers who joined the mobs that attacked the Jews and Muslims.
