Louis and Rachel Lesk Memorial Fund in Israel Studies: Film Screening

Translating (France, 2011)

70 min. Multilingual with English subtitles.

Followed by a post-screening discussion by film director Nurith Aviv and Yigal Nizri (University of Toronto).

Translating is a Babel-like film in which translators from different countries, expressing themselves in their own languages, talk about their experience as conveyors of written Hebrew literature from over the centuries: through Midrash, medieval Hebrew poetry, modern and contemporary literature. The translators talk passionately about their encounters with a language that sometimes leads them to transgress the rules of their own language. Edouard Glissant says, “Every translation today becomes part of a network of all possible translations, from any language into any other language.” With: Sandrick le Maguer (Brest), Angel Saenz-Badillos (Boston), Yitshok Niborski (Malakoff), Anna-Linda Callow (Milano), Sivan Beskin (Tel Aviv), Manuel Forcano (Barcelona), Chana Bloch (Berckeley), Anne Birkenhauer (Jerusalem), Rosie Pinhas-Delpuech (Paris), and Ala Hlehel (Acre).

Free and open to the public. No registration required.
