Daniel Schroeter, “850,000 Refugees? Explaining the Flight of Jews from the Muslim World to Israel”

Shoshana Shier Lecture Series

The idea of the "forgotten refugees"—that some 850,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries—has become a part of contested political debates on Israel and Palestine. The politicization of the issue of the emigration of Jews from Arab lands, has clouded the understanding of the reasons for the mass exodus of Jews from Muslim countries. This lecture will offer a more complicated explanation of the uprooting and flight of Jews from Arab lands in the period after the foundation of Israel in 1948.
