Adele Reinhartz, “Slip Sliding Away: Rethinking the ‘Parting of the Ways’ between Judaism and Christianity”

David Lipson Memorial Lecture

The process by which believers in Christ came to define themselves, their beliefs, practices and institutions over against Jews and Judaism remains one of the most fraught historical issues in the historical study of early Christianity. This talk will explore the influential role that the most common metaphor for this process -- "the parting of the ways" -- has played in the debate over the past two decades. Would we understand the relationship between Judaism and Christianity differently if we used different language to describe it?

Adele Reinhartz is Professor in the Department of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa.
